Video Surveillance and Intrusion Detection

An alarm tells you something happened. A camera tells you what. Run separately, one produces call-outs nobody can triage and the other produces recordings nobody watches. Verification is what makes both worth having, and connecting them is mostly a mapping exercise rather than a purchase.

An alarm tells you something happened. A camera tells you what. Run separately, the first produces call-outs nobody can triage and the second produces recordings nobody watches. Together they produce something closer to an actual response capability.

Why the two meet

Intrusion detection is a set of sensors: contacts on doors and windows, motion detectors, glass break sensors. Each one can tell you that a condition was met. None of them can tell you whether it was a burglar, a cleaner, a delivery or a moth.

That gap is expensive. Unverified alarms produce call-outs at three in the morning for a door that blew open, and after enough of those the alarm stops being treated as information. Verification, which means looking at the scene before deciding what to do, is the difference between an alarm system and an alarm nuisance.

Federal control guidance pairs them explicitly. NIST SP 800-53 includes a control enhancement to PE-6, titled Intrusion Alarms and Surveillance Equipment, which reads: "Monitor physical access to the facility where the system resides using physical intrusion alarms and surveillance equipment." Its discussion is equally direct about the division of labor. Alarm systems "work in conjunction with physical barriers, physical access control systems, and security guards by triggering a response when these other forms of security have been compromised or breached," and surveillance equipment "includes video cameras installed at strategic locations throughout the facility."

What the combination changes

  • Alarms become verifiable. A sensor trips and the camera covering it produces the clip. Whoever is deciding what to do sees the scene rather than guessing from a zone number.
  • False call-outs drop. Most activations have a mundane explanation, and being able to see it in seconds avoids sending someone across town. This is where the money is.
  • The alarm gets a recording attached. Detection is the moment the footage matters, and pairing the two means the clip is bookmarked automatically rather than searched for later.
  • Cameras earn their keep out of hours. Continuous recording is a passive archive. Sensor-driven review turns the same system into something that surfaces events without anyone watching.
  • Coverage gaps become obvious. The moment you connect zones to cameras you discover which zones no camera actually covers. That mapping exercise is worth doing on its own merits.

Where to start

  1. Map zones to cameras on paper. Every alarm zone, and the camera that shows it. Gaps in that table are the first thing to fix, and the exercise costs nothing.
  2. Synchronize time across both systems. A clip that does not line up with the activation is worse than no clip, because it invites the wrong conclusion.
  3. Decide what an activation should produce. A bookmark on the timeline, a clip sent somewhere, a notification, or all three. Choose per zone: a fire door at the back of a warehouse and a reception door warrant different treatment.
  4. Keep pre-event and post-event recording. Footage that starts when the sensor trips has missed the approach. A modest pre-event buffer is usually the difference between seeing what happened and seeing the aftermath.
  5. Write down who does what. Who receives a notification out of hours, who verifies, who calls whom. Verification without an agreed responder is an interesting video and nothing else.
  6. Rehearse it. Trip a zone deliberately and follow the whole path through to a decision. Almost every integration has one broken link, and this is how it is found.
